Review of 'Bittersweet' by Sophie Ellis-Bextor for Big City

Janet Ellis was a Blue Peter presenter of note in the 1980s but her best work was arguably done by giving birth to yummy mummy Sophie Ellis-Bextor.

In keeping with her mother’s rich heritage, the angular songstress delved back to the electro-synth-led sounds of the 1980s for her latest and some would say overdue, pop offering.

Having popped out baby number two on her way back to the recording studio, the single’s title ‘Bittersweet’ might sound like a description of nappy-laden motherhood.

Yet this is a simple tale of heart-wrenching love, guaranteed to get lovelorn teenage girls everywhere mouthing along to their iPods.

It will have the rest of us tapping our toes to the annoyingly catchy hook in no time at all.

For those of us who can remember, the music has shades of 80s legends Yazoo, minus the melancholy little bald bloke – younger readers should check out Yazoo on You Tube.

There’s potential for a decent dance mix and happily the elfin-faced one’s vocals have lost none of their vibrato-laden power during her mothering break.

If you are a lover of all things pop then this heralds a more than passable return to chart form by Ms Ellis-Bextor.
